SHAPE - Season 3
SHAPE is an acronym (Simply, Human, Advocating, Positivity, Everywhere), which involves not only celebrating the inclusivity of outer beauty, but inner beauty, too! I believe that having a mindset that is in good shape is the foundation for a healthy self-image and esteem. With The Shape Campaign, that is exactly what we’re doing for women everywhere. My goal is for women to see and think of themselves in a way that empowers and inspires them to show up for themselves in the best way possible. Don’t get it twisted though, I am not saying that outer beauty isn’t important, I am however saying that it is important that women feel good about themselves just for them, without external validation. I mean words of affirmation are always great to hear from others, but I want women to start within first.
Oftentimes when I tell folks about The Shape Campaign, their mind instantly relates it to something surrounding body positivity or body image. While celebrating body diversity is a component of what The Shape Campaign represents, it encompasses a meaning that goes beyond beauty that is only skin deep. SHAPE is an acronym (Simply, Human, Advocating, Positivity, Everywhere), which involves not only celebrating the inclusivity of outer beauty, but inner beauty, too! I believe that having a mindset that is in good shape is the foundation for a healthy self-image and esteem.
I have seen too many cases where people (men and women) constantly put themselves down with poor self-talk and perception. It deeply affects me in a way where I feel their pain. It’s like, circumstances and the way we’re brought up do not always afford us the right footing to be able to pull ourselves up when we face setbacks, encounter adversity, or even feel inadequate. Then it spreads like wildfire, you put yourself down or say you’re not this or you’re too that… and then it’s all downhill from there. What’s even worse is that when a mother has a child who may overhear them say these things to themselves, the child is soaking up the same negative thought patterns. See what I mean? I truly believe that representation is essential, think about it, when you see someone that you have some sort of common ground or similarity with, whether it is a certain hairline pattern, or maybe a facial feature that isn’t necessarily always celebrated, or perhaps it has nothing to do with a physical attribute. Perhaps, there’s an individual who shares the same interest in a hobby that you thought was misunderstood by your family or friend group or even a personality type. You may have grown up in a family who were all very outgoing and social butterflies, but you may be shy and reserved and have to warm up to strangers a bit first. Either way, the point I am making is that there's nothing inherently wrong with being on any side of those spectrums. Just think about how relieved you may feel to see an example of yourself being represented on TV, in a movie, in music, in advertisements, but not in a stereotypical way that marginalizes folks, but in a way that implies that having differences is something to celebrate and not hide.
